It's time you make some yummy treats for your furry friends. But it's not as simple as cooking for ourselves. You should first understand and know what ingredients you can work with, find out if your dog has any health condition, and see if he or she is allergic to anything. We sought out Chef Mariko Amekodommo's advice to find just what's right for your furry sibling! "Each holiday season, I make batches of biscuits for my friends' dogs. Not having any at home myself, they are always surprised by the beautiful jars filled with healthy snacks their dogs love," says Mariko.

Once you begin making dog treats yourself, you’ll never be tempted to purchase store-bought versions again. The best part of baking fresh dog treats yourself is that you can customise them based on the specific needs of your pets. Here are a few safe additions you can include in the recipe below for extra added benefits

Cinnamon: Contains antioxidants, has anti-inflammatory properties to counteract the effects of diabetes and arthritis. Another great reason to include cinnamon is that it helps fight dog breath. Just sprinkle on top of the treats before baking.

Ginger: Use ground ginger to help with inflammation and to increase blood circulation with older dogs. It’s also proven to help sooth nausea and digestive issues. Add ¼ teaspoon of dried ginger to the recipe below, fresh ginger may be too strong for dog tastebuds.

Parsley: Containing antioxidants, fiber, vitamins and minerals – parsley helps improve organ function, flush toxins and improves bad breath. Add ½ cup chopped fresh parsley to the recipe below and blend until smooth.

Turmeric: Has your dog had too many unhealthy treats? Turmeric helps boost metabolism to accelerate weight loss and provides benefits for joints, brain and cardiovascular health. It’s also been shown to protect against cancer. Use ½ teaspoon dried turmeric in the recipe below.
